This post is about an introduction W. Somerset Maugham wrote for a posthumous collection of short stories by Bruno Frank, which has not been registered in published bibliography or collected in other publications of our writer, or at least as far as I know. This piece of writing isn't mentioned in Stott, or collected in John Whitehead's A Traveller in Romance. Uncollected Writings 1901-1964. Bruno Frank doesn't seem to have appeared in Maugham's biographies either. However, the manuscript was in Loren & Frances Rothchild's collection, and Frank's book is mentioned in Norman Moore's catalogue.
This appears to be a collection printed just after Frank's death, caused by a heart attack, in 1945. I can't say why Maugham was asked to pen the introduction, although he did know Frank personally. Shortly before this collection, Maugham wrote an introduction to Dorothy Parker, also published by The Viking Press in 1944.
Maugham did think well of Frank, and he included one of his short stories, "The Golden Beetle," in Tellers of Tales (1939).
Bruno Frank (1887 – 1945) was a German writer. Maugham gave a very brief biography of him, as is habitual with his longer essays on authors, and deferred any judgement of his works to the readers. He appeared to think well of Frank as a person. What is interesting about the introduction is that it includes a defence of fiction:
The object of fiction is neither to preach nor to instruct, but to entertain, and if it does not do that, whatever other merits it has, it fails of its purpose. It must, in short, be readable; but readability does not depend only on the author; it depends on the reader as well; he must be able to sympathize with the characters of the author's invention, take an interest in their doings, want to know how they deal with their predicaments, and be curious to see what happens to them. All this means that he must have an interest in human nature and in human behavior. There are people who tell you they cannot read fiction; they give you to understand that their minds are too busy with more important things; I think this is baloney. They are like the people who despise cards: ask them one or two pertinent questions and you will discover that they have no card sense. it is the same with people who despise fiction: they lack the imagination to put themselves in the place of the persons of the author's invention and so take part in their trials and tribulations; they are, in fact, too self-centered to be interested in anyone but themselves.
What I find illuminating is also Maugham's identification of one of Frank's major themes and his interpretation of it. It is a very humane reading of the desire to escape oneself, to escape one's environment to break free to be someone else.
"An Adventure in Venice" is not only an interesting and even exciting tale, it does not only show how sensitive he was to the beauties of nature and the beauties of art, it touches upon a theme which he dealt with in other stories and so which, one may suppose, revealed a deep-seated urge. There is something of it in "The Moon Watch," something in "The Unknown Woman." It was this urge, perhaps, that led him in early youth to break away from home and wander into unknown countries. I fancy there was in him, as in the characters he created, a passionate desire to escape from the common round, from domestic ties and the humdrum of every day, from success and the comfort that accompanies it, to some far-off place, a place on the map or a place only in the spirit, where life was new, strange, and adventurous. It is a pathetic but natural urge, and it is thwarted by habit, duty, common sense; and perhaps it is well that it should be thwarted, for when we seek thus to escape it is not from our surroundings and our circumstances, as we foolishly imagine, but from ourselves; and that is impossible. The advantage the writer has over other mortals is that by the means of his pen or his typewriter he can sublimate his longing. The reverse of the medal is that it is this longing in us that makes us writers when we might be mayors of cities, directors of banks, or manufacturers of motor cars, and so respectable members of the community.
This reading provides depth to understand Maugham's own creations. Take Philip in Of Human Bondage (1915) as an example. He is desperate to go to Spain, because it is exotic, it promises him something that he can't find in England, it signifies freedom. If we think of what Maugham says here, Philip is looking for ways to get away from himself, just like when he imitates boys he finds attractive and looks up to when he is at school. He wishes to be someone else. He wishes to be popular and have a normal foot. His decision to give up his dream and stay with Sally perhaps is more than a compromise and an admission to defeat, but an act of accepting himself, his defect, like Sally has accepted his defect. Spain wouldn't have cured him. After Spain, he would have yearned for something else. And thus his recognition would have been forever deferred, attributed to something else, instead of himself. It is his acceptance of himself that would relieve him.
As a result, I don't agree that this is an unsatisfactory ending at all. It is an acceptance of oneself, a recognition of one's worth, the hardest test of all.
