Here and There - W. Somerset Maugham

Here and There. Short Stories (London: Heinemann, 1948)

This is a collection of previously published short stories, thus the title. Three more collections of used stories will follow: Quartet (1948), Trio (1950) and Encore (1952), which have been subsequently turned into films. Here is the table of content of the present collection:

  • Three Fat Women of Antibes
  • The Lotus Eater
  • Lord Mountdrago
  • Gigolo and Gigolette
  • An Official Position
  • The Facts of Life
  • Winter Cruise
  • Flotsam and Jetsame
  • Sanatorium
  • Episode
  • Appearance and Reality
  • The Unconquered
  • The Happy Man
  • In a Strange Land
  • The Luncheon
  • Salvatore
  • Home
  • The End of the Flight
  • The Ant and the Grasshopper
  • The Man with the Scar
  • Louise
  • A String of Beads
  • The Verger
  • The Social Sense
The edition that I have is a first stated edition from Heinemann, with its typical dust wrap. The papers are of poor quality, but first editions with dust jacket are not expensive at all, from US$15 onwards. For those who want a taste of Maugham's short stories, this selection is not bad. For other editions, Search Amazon.com for Here and There, where some very good deals can be found for the first editions.
